Misadventures in a Georgia Snow
We went for a day hike in the north Georgia mountains around Thanksgiving and ended up chasing snow.
Here is what we had on the sunny side of the mountain! Quite the contrast, huh?
Funny story this snow. We were puttering along up some random forest service road in hubby’s XTerra (not 4WD), and we started seeing some light snow on trees. Oooh pretty. It was really beautiful, especially in contrast to the brightly colored fall foliage all around.
Well, pretty light specks of snow turned into an inch or two on these windy, bumpy, narrow roads. The ground was warm, the air was cold, and the snow was turning into slush/ice. We slowly felt the tires losing a bit of traction as we chugged uphill. “Honey, should we turn around. Its getting slick” I warned.
“No. Its fine. This car was built for this”… uh huh. Famous last words. Suffice to say, 1/4 mile later we were stuck. We were stuck safely, but we were stuck. There was a nice ice slick under the car. Couldn’t go uphill without traction. Couldn’t go downhill because we just slid straight, and we were positioned near a curve.
…don’t fret.. This story has a happy ending. Doubly so because I get an “I told you so” moment.
Everybody out of the car: me, hubby, and Moe. First thing first, I had to make sure Moe was safe. So I tied her to a tree uphill from the car. Then Mike and I got to the business of chipping the truck out from our icey tracks. 30 minutes later we were able to slowly inch the car downhill enough to make a 3 point turn… where we promptly got stuck again in some ice/snow crap. Backwards. Forwards. Backwards. Forwards. Backwards. Forwards. You get the idea. We made it out. Yay!

All back into the car. [Cue my gloating]. Moe looked perturbed that she didn’t get her hike, and so she got some carrots to placate her.
Suffice to say, we did not make it to the waterfall that day. But we saw some fun snow in Georgia in November.
